The question I sometimes battle with is, can you truly reverse candida overgrowth naturally? While the process involves a change in your eating habits, lifestyle, and routine — healing from candida overgrowth takes a concerted effort. Taking supplements is an important step in the candida cleanse because it can help support your body by providing nutrients in areas where there may be a lack.
I used to think of supplements as a “nice to have” addition to your food intake. For example, if a blood test determines you have low Vitamin B, you can opt to supplement with pills to help restore your Vitamin B levels or choose to get that nutrition via food intake. In the case of candida overgrowth, it hampers your digestive function which can benefit from the support of supplements for the best possible results.
Taking supplements increases the chance of restoring your immune system back to its optimal function. In this blog post, I’ll summarize the three must-have supplements you need during a candida cleanse.
Probiotics: Rebuilding Your Gut Flora
When it comes to candida overgrowth, restoring the balance of your gut microbiome is key. I remember it being explained to me by ND, Nicole Constant, to think of your microbiome (the community of microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses that exist in your digestive tract) as a forest.
Forests are full of various trees, shrubs, weeds, and plants which all serve a purpose for the environment. If weeds were to overpopulate the forest, it would cause an unbalance and harm the environment. In relation to your microbiome, there are various microorganisms that carry out a particular function to produce general health. When candida albicans overtake the population of otherwise regulated microorganisms, it creates a disruption in your digestive system. This leaves room for pathogens such as yeast to overtake the “forest” in your gut and cause problems. Luckily, the way to counter this is to supplement with probiotics since they contain beneficial bacteria that can restore the balance of “good” bacteria, reduce the harmful yeast, and ultimately create a healthier gut environment.
Look for probiotic supplements that contain strains like Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Saccharomyces boulardii. These strains are known for their effectiveness in supporting gut health.
Antifungal Herbs: Nature’s Defense Against Candida
To assist with the healing process the body has to undergo, a candida cleanse is best accompanied by the use of antifungal supplements. These antifungal herbs have natural properties that can help to kill or inhibit the growth of candida. Some of the most potent antifungal herbs include:
- Oregano Oil: Oregano oil contains carvacrol and thymol, two compounds with powerful antifungal properties.
- Olive Leaf Extract: This extract is known for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and can be effective against Candida.
- Garlic: Garlic is a potent antifungal and immune-boosting herb that can be consumed fresh or in supplement form.
When using antifungal herbs, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional or naturopathic doctor to determine the right dosage for your candida cleanse.
Fibre: Removing the Candida Die-Off from Your Body
Restoring good bacteria is important since you’ll be using antifungal herbs to rid of overgrowth yeast, but what about removing the waste from your body? That’s where fibre comes into factor. Fibre supplements are not only helpful for removing candida die-off, it is also helpful to bulk stool and promote regular bowel movements. It is extremely important to have regular bowel movements while on the cleanse, and in life in general. For optimal health, humans should have 1 to 2 bowel movements per day.
In other words, if you’re on a candida cleanse and you’ve got probiotics and antifungals in order, yet do not have regular bowel movements, you could be reabsorbing the toxins in your body and/or bloodstream which can have the reverse effect on your healing. Taking a fibre supplement and consuming enough water to help carry out the waste can make all the difference for your healing.
Conclusion
A Candida cleanse will take you on a journey of self, one that is full of many learnings, growth and transformation. To get the most out of your cleanse, consider incorporating the three essential supplements discussed in this article: probiotics, antifungal herbs, and fibre. Remember that a holistic approach, which includes dietary changes and lifestyle modifications, is essential for long-term success.
