I’m usually the worst person to ask when it comes to skin care products. Up until last year my idea of a skin care routine involved using Neutrogena to remove makeup and that’s it lol. Well a lot has changed since then as I still use Neutrogena, BUT I’ve been slowly incorporating more natural skin care products in my day to day.
I feel like I’ve been experiencing a shift in other areas of my life since transitioning into a meat-free diet. It sounds silly but it’s a real thing. I also think in general that people are becoming more knowledgeable on the skincare products they’re using and are willingly opting for something natural instead. If it does the same job and can even give you better results, then why not?
I was super happy to discover that my cousin, Toshanna, had created her own organic skin care line called Indie Beauty using all natural ingredients.
Everything is so detailed from the packaging, to the brand and of course the quality and make of the products. All hand-crafted, research and hard work went into making the products which you can purchase on her Etsy store here!
I tried some of the products out and I promise this is my unbiased opinion, but they’re really good! If you’re considering making the switch to all natural beauty care, head over to her page and take a look. I reviewed the deodorant, A.B.S wash and whipped shea butter which should help you with your buying decision.
Indie Beauty Review
A.B.S “Head-to-toe” Cleanser
As apart of my morning routine (and to wake myself up) I have to wash my face. It just doesn’t feel right if I continue with my day without doing so. As a part of my morning routine, I’ll rinse my face with ice cold water then follow it up with A.B.S cleanser.
What I like about this product is that it can be used for more than just being a facial cleanser. Although I’ve chosen to only use it as a face cleanser, it can be used as shampoo, body wash and can probably be used to clean surfaces too! I’m not one for the pre-cleanses and other various products that are heavily marketed for facial care, but it’s a win for me if I can use one product to wash off my makeup AND clean my face.
I only use about 2-3 drops in the palm of my hand and mix it with few drops of water. It doesn’t take much to get this cleanser foaming up (I have the travel size and it’s lasted me for almost a month!)
The ingredients are 100% natural and is made from: honey, shea butter, coconut oil, black soap, plantain, aloe vera.
All Natural Deodorant (Shea Butter and Coconut Oil)
Disclaimer: Deodorant is not the same as antiperspirant. Like the name says, deodorant will help de-odourize the scent that accompanies perspiration however it will not save you from sweating whereas antiperspirant will ideally ensure you do not sweat or smell. For years I’ve been using antiperspirants because I viewed them as harmless. They smell amazing and I never had to worry about sweating again. Then I had to remember that sweating is a normal bodily function, so why was I trying to get rid of that? Not to mention, all these cases of cancer that have been on the rise and closely associated with antiperspirants made very reluctant to use it.
Switching from antiperspirants to natural deodorant is not for everyone lol. You have to be patient with it and readjust to your body again. When I first used a natural deodorant, everything down to the way I applied it was different. I had to use my fingers and rub in the hardened oils which is very different than the three seconds it would take me to swipe a Dove deodorant under my arm.
Seeing that shea butter and coconut oil are the two main ingredients, I like to apply it by hand. It depends on the day I’m having but it does its job, which is to deodourize a scent, however I do still sweat. But I’m okay with that – I feel much better knowing that I’m using something natural.
I’m slowly easing off of using regular creams/lotions and working towards relying on all natural oils to moisturize my skin. The only off putting thing for me when it comes to using natural oils as lotion is how difficult it can be to apply. If you’ve ever come across natural raw shea or coconut butter in a beauty store, you’d know how impossible it may seem to apply it evenly. When it’s 100% real and raw, it’s like taking a hardened clay and rubbing it on your skin (which hurts by the way lol). This made my purchase a little easier when I came across the Triple Whipped Shea Butter.
Light-weight, compact and easy to apply butter that didn’t require too much effort from me (if you haven’t noticed I don’t like to go through much trouble lol). Triple-whipped butter implies that the butter is being softened up which makes for an easy application. I purchased the travel size which is just perfect for what I was looking for (I was hoping to use this as a hand/foot cream on the go).
After rubbing it on my hands, it has my skin glowing and very moisturized making this product an easy favourite.
